ROCKWiRED RADiO PROFiLES
PRESENTS:
THE FULL THROTTLE POWER POP OF ACT THiRTEEN AND THEiR LATEST EP SALUTE AND SMiLE
MARCH
5, 2012 - On “RABBIT,” one of the infectious, blistering tracks on ACT
THIRT33N’s new EP SALUTE AND SMILE, the Atlanta-based alt
rockers find provocative, insightful ways to declare their desire for
fresh paths free from stagnancy and a negative culture that conspires
to keep us all down. The title metaphor of a running
rabbit—and the song’s feeling of fleeing from darkness and running into
the light--is perfectly in line with the way the popular four piece
group has evolved from its origins as garage band pop-punkers to a more
diverse and fully realized alternative indie ensemble. Incredibly, all
this growth has happened in just over a year—but that’s a long time for
a band whose oldest members (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist ANDY
MORGAN and drummer PAT MEISEL) are 17. In a major progression from
their 2010 EP MAKE THIS DAY YOUR OWN, the five track collection
features a cool mix of unconventional song structures, an edgier, more
focused musical vibe, and overriding themes of nonconformity and
freedom from the world’s limited expectations. In addition to “RABBIT,”
which was released as a lead digital single last August, SALUTE ADN
SMILE—whose title is from a line in the song “SIC 'EM BOYS!”—also
includes an accoustic version of 2010’s hit “LAST BREATH.”
Another key track on Salute and Smile is the uniquely titled “DECEMBER
THEIVES,” which on the surface is a powerful love song, but underneath
illustrates the soulful longing most of the band’s most recent songs
portray. During live shows, lead singer Andy Morgan
introduces “DECEMBER THEIVES” by saying simply: “This is a song about a
girl.” But the song is also a metaphor for how this “girl”
stole away the chilly winter months and replaced them in the singer’s
heart with something bigger, warmer, and more dynamic.
Namely, something that lasts.
