ROCKWiRED RADiO PROFiLES PRESENTS:
THE RAW, iNTiMATE SOUND OF SOPHIST AND THEiR NEW RELEASE 'THE WHiTE EP'
JUNE
21, 2012 - In
ancient Greece, sophists were a category of teachers who specialized
in using the tools of philosophy and rhetoric for the purpose of
teaching aręte – excellence, or virtue – predominantly to young
statesmen and nobility. According to TIM PALMER, they came in
conflict with philosophers like Plato and were often called “rogue”
or “deceptive” in their teachings. PALMER’s fascination with
the concept and the contrast between the “official” history and
the real story of these men led the multi-talented Southern New
Jersey based singer-songwriter to choose the moniker “SOPHIST” to
record and perform under. It’s a nod to sarcasm with a bit of
rebellion. With a wide range of influences ranging from EDDIE VEDDER
and THE MARS VOLTA to MILES DAVIS and various dubstep artists, PALMER
is launching the new phase of his recording career in a fascinating
way—starting with the release of his stark, all acoustic three
track set THE WHITE EP on June
23. THE WHITE EP, a very
personal intro to the SOPHiST experience whose vibe is inspired
largely by EDDIE VEDDER’s INTO THE WILD soundtrack,
opens with the plaintive and atmospheric “FORTUNE SQUANDER,” a
very personal song PALMER wrote about his feeling of helpless
frustration as he dealt with his younger sister’s addictions prior
to her entering rehab. “RUN” is a lighter hearted, strumming
driven tune about running away from someone you love, only to find
that you’re always longing for and circling back to that person in
some ways; the idea is that nothing stays the same when you lose the
person you love. The passionate and incisive “THIN RED LINE”
holds a mirror up to a society that has given up its spiritual core
in its quest for prosperity and a thriving capitalist system. ADVERTiSEMENTS
