There is no business model quite like that of a rock n roll band. There is no guarantee that money is going to come through or that an audience is going to show up for a performance. And on the creative and performance fronts egos can become fragile. For years we've followed SCATTER THEIR OWN and have marveled at the fact that band has remained resilient in a musical environment where music doesn't make money and rock n roll isn't quite the music of the day. The strength of this band lies in the creative and romantic bond of it's creative nucleus SCOTTI and JULIANA CLIFFORD. SCATTER THEIR OWN is a family affair where music comes before ego. Since the band first came onto the scene in 2013, SCATTER THEIR OWN have become media darlings throughout Indian Country and beyond on the strength of their music and JULIANA's camera readiness (check out the cover of the latest edition of NATIVE MAX MAGAZINE). The band's straight ahead rock sound has earned them a loyal following throughout the U.S. and beyond so it's no surprise that their debut album TASTE THE TIME is now nominated for the INDIGENOUS MUSIC AWARD for BEST ROCK ALBUM. Despite the nomination the Oglala Lakota couple know that there is work to be done with a series of upcoming shows as well as the follow up their stellar debut.

THE STARS OF HEAVEN

It's not all that common for gospel music to be featured here on ROCKWIRED and it's even less common that we get to to profiles people that are in the same business that we're in - online radio. DAWN KARIMA - or DR. DAWN KARIMA PETTIGREW to you - is the author of two novels, THE WAY WE MAKE SENSE and THE MARRIAGE OF SAINTS and co-author of CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY READ and is the host of the online radio show A CONVERSATION WITH DAWN KARIMA which is available through TALKTAINMENT RADIO. Outside of these rather exciting ventures this Creek/Cherokee juggernaut has made her voice known in song as well. He debut album THE WORSHIP OF ANGELS was a winner at the NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS in 2013 for BEST GOSPEL/INSPIRATIONAL CD now she's back with her follow up CD THE STARS OF HEAVEN which boasts an all-star cast of performers such as N-DON, LITO and SAINT MIKE. Not surprisingly, this fresh and vibrant set of songs is nominated for the INDIGENOUS MUSIC AWARD for BEST GOSPEL CD.

AND CUTS FROM THEiR FORTHCOMiNG ALBUM

To find a native rock band that embraces that straight ahead hard rock sound ROCK IS RED has traditionally had to look above the U.S./Canadian border. The Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation on North Dakota is merely a hop skip and a jump from Canada and it's home to the band ND 22 whose bombastic heavy metal sound boasts a strong blues-based sensibility. Formed in 2013,  the band - comprised of KEITH BIG CROW on guitars, vocalist TOMMY NELSON, IAN NELSON on drums, KODY FOX on guitar and JOSH RED FEATHER-RAMIREZ - cut their teeth musically in numerous bars an casino lounges. They've taken their electrifying live show beyond the the Dakotas and their original material is due for an official release. The tracks that have us the most exciting are the rapturous rock anthems 66, 44 TO THE 5 and SOMEWHERE.

The start of his music career was marked lone acoustic recordings before venturing into an electronic sound which had earned him some recognition in Canadian press. Now he is putting aside the electronics and looking to the assist of an actual band - a group of roots rock troubadours known cleverly as THE HOLLYWOOD INDIANS. The results of their toiling inthe studio has resulted in an album that hasn't officially been released but is gaining traction and attention thanks to the internet yet despite the album "limbo" release it has earned WILL BELCOURT AND THE HOLLYWOOD INDIANS two INDIGENOUS MUSIC AWARD nominations for BEST ROCK ALBUM and BEST SONGWRITER.

ROCKWIRED MEDIA has launched a brand new digital magazine.  Since the launch of BRIAN LUSH'S ROCKWIRED (formerly ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE) ROCKWIRED MEDIA and it's founder BRIAN LUSH have taken special care to shine an ever-loving light on the  musical output by bands and recording artists from Indian Country. Since ROCKWIRED is an American Indian-owned web publishing company (and BRIAN LUSH'S ROCKWIRED is the first American Indian-owned rock magazine), it goes without saying that giving it up for aboriginal talent  is more than a mere cause du jour. It's all about passion and that passion has led to the creation of the acclaimed podcast series ABORIGINAL SOUNDS which has nurtured  and promoted talent from the likes of  Rosebud Sioux hip hop artist FRANK WALN to rockers such as GHOST TOWN ORCHESTRA and BLACK STONE.

Now ROCKWIRED MEDIA has released  ROCK IS RED - a brand new digital magazine celebrating American Indian and First Nations music makers and entrepreneurs. The magazine is  a stylish publication with some interactive features as well as some audio treats which have proven to be ROCKWIRED's stock and trade. The premiere issue launched on May 20, 2015 exclusively through ROCKWIRED.COM and features exclusive interviews with GHOST TOWN  ORCHESTRA, CODY BLACKBiRD, INNASTATE, DAVIDICA, SIHASIN, BLACK STONE, KICKIN KROTCH and more.

Accompanying the run of this  magazine is the podcast series also titled ROCK IS RED. The magazine is a quarterly release to run as a supplemental to BRIAN LUSH'S ROCKWIRED.

ROCK iS RED
PRESENTS AN EXCLUSiVE iNTERViEW WiTH ADRiAN WALL OF iNNASTATE AND CUTS FROM THEiR SELF-TiTLED DEBUT EP
Typically, a band that has only been together for a year doesn't have a whole lot to offer in the way of history but INNASTATE is a band with a past. The band's founder ADRIAN WALL - a world renowned Jemez Pueblo sculptor -  first flexed his musical muscle as the bass player of the band RED EARTH. During RED EARTH's tenure the band in almost single-handedly electrified their local Albuquerque scene and even generated a buzz throughout Indian Country with a sound that combined the groove of reggae and ska with the alternative rock posturing that was all the rage in the mid to late-nineties. After spending years away from music making WALL teamed with bassist and co-songwriter RYLAN KABOTIE and drummer LAWRENCE BAILON to form INNASTATE and the results of their labor in the studio can be heard on their self-titled EP. Not surprisingly WALL's inclination for that irresistible reggae groove is still as strong as ever but it's tempered by lyrics that are reflective and a delivery that is more earnest than RED EARTH's war whoop. JIR ANDERSON on lead guitar adds a roots rock touch to this very promising debut.

PRESENTS AN EXCLUSiVE iNTERViEW AND MUSiC FROM DUSTiN HARDER OF THE DUSTY ROADS BAND
Blues music and the Native experience are so intertwined that it was only a matter of time before ROCK IS RED turned our attention to a Native blues troubadour. Sure DUSTIN HARDER and his band THE DUSTY ROADS BAND have a musical palate that is wide and expansive but all of it can be traced back to the blues. Listeners first got a taste of the band's blues-based approach on the 2009 album SEARCHIN FOR A RIVER.  In the time since that album's release DUSTIN and the band has released a single here and a single there. Fans of the band's dexterity and versatility can now breathe a sigh of relief because HARDER is working on some songs for a upcoming album and the Metis troubadour promises that the sound and the songwriting will be cranked up a notch.  Given the man's track record thus far we can only assume that the music will most definitely rock - even if it is the blues that we're talking about.

PRESENTS AN EXCLUSiVE iNTERViEW WITH CODY BLACKBiRD AND CUTS FROM HiS CURRENT RELEASE EUPHORiA AND HiS BAND'S FORTHCOMiNG RELEASE THiS SiDE UP

For the third edition of the ROCK IS RED podcast we've caught up with flute player and composer CODY BLACKBIRD (Cherokee/Dakota) whose haunting compositions and performances have earned him universal acclaim as well as a few industry accolades such as a couple of Native American Music Awards for Flutist of the Year and for for Song of the Year in 2012 for the track HEAR MY CRY with Rosebud Sioux hip hop artist FRANK WALN. In the years since that NAMMY win, BLACKBIRD has experienced disillusionment over an alleged mishandling of royalties over the song HEAR MY CRY  but  that  disillusionment has allowed BLACKBIRD to challenge himself as both a musician and an artist. His current EP release EUPHORIA - Produced by TERRANCE JAYE (Oglala Sioux hip hop producer) - takes BLACKBIRD's mesmerizing flute sounds and combines them with ambient beats and electronic textures.  His forthcoming release THIS SIDE UP is being released by his eponymous band  and is stylistically different from EUPHORIA or any of his previous releases. THIS SIDE UP introduces us to CODY BLACK BIRD - the multi-instrumentalist and singer with a message about the human condition. The first track to be made available form THIS SIDE UP is the acoustic guitar driven PROMISED LAND - a good old fashioned protest song giving a big middle finger to the KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE.

ROCK iS RED PRESENTS AN EXCLUSiVE iNTERViEW WITH LOGAN STAATS (SiX NATiONS) OF GHOST TOWN ORCHESTRA AND CUTS FROM THEiR ALBUM DEAD WAiT
Is there any wonder we gave this band the cover for the premiere issue of ROCK IS RED? We first became acquainted with this Ontario-based band of rockers back in August of 2014 after the band had just been nominated for BEST ROCK BAND in the ABORIGINAL PEOPLES CHOICE MUSIC AWARDS. Months aafter we had featured them  they had actually walked away with the prize. It always feels good when you can pick a winner.  There is still a tremendous amount of momentum that has been built by their win and ROCKWIRED sees really big things happening with this band - hopefully a little more attention Stateside. Citing influences such as RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, BOB DYLAN, TOM WAITS, THE DARKNESS, THE BLACK KEYS  and KINGS OF LEON, GHOST TOWN ORCHESTRA create a vibrant folk-inspired sound well suited for fans of rock & roll and alternative folk fans alike. LOGAN STAATS (guitar/vocals),VICTORMARTISIUS (guitar/vocals), IAN MARTINS (Bass/vocals) and PAUL VENDITTI (Drums) steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock-funk outfit during the the early summer of 2012 in the forgotten ghost town of Brantford Ontario. What began as a simple collaboration project between the young but scattered musicians quickly transformed into a rambunctious hybrid of swaggering indie rock and danceable Folk not bound by any specific genre. Guided by sandpaper-gritty vocals, a blend of raw unpolished boogie rock, and unvarnished guitar parts these gentlemen of the stage are set to prove that anything is possible when you put you heart and soul into it.

On April 15th ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE will be launching a quarterly digital magazine called ROCK IS RED and to get the buzz going on this exciting new publication ROCKWIRED is also launching a new podcast series of the same name. Actually the idea for ROCK IS RED is an old one here at ROCKWIRED. For years produced the online podcast series ABORIGINAL SOUNDS which featured music and exclusive interviews with the top American Indian and First Nations recording artists. After a while we felt that the show needed a name change and reboot and now we've done it. And somewhere along the way we came up with the idea to give ROCK IS RED it's own magazine. Why has a rock music magazine like ROCKWIRED gone through all of this trouble to highlight music makers from Indian Country? Well the answer is simple. ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE is the first American Indian-owned rock magazine. As a music journalist and a member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe I feel like I've got a responsibility to promote the music of Indian people now matter what the music is really. While ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE focuses solely on active rock the music that will be featured on ROCK IS RED will cover a wider range of music.

THE PLAYLIST FOR THIS SNEAK PREVIEW INCLUDES:

GHOST TOWN ORCHESTRA - "LIES WILL BURY US"
SIHASIN - "NEVER SURRENDER"
INNASTATE - "PROMISE"
BLACK STONE - "ARE  YOU READY?"
KICKIN' KROTCH - "FEARLESS"
CODY BLACKBIRD - "RECONCILE"
DAVIDICA - "U TRUST WHO"

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All submissions are to be emailed to djlush@rockwired.com and have "Rock is Red" referenced in the subject line. All submission are to contain the following:

  • Three (3) mp3 or WAV files of completed songs

  • A brief biography of the artist/band

  • Links to any relevant websites or press

Because this program is designed to promote American Indian and First Nations artists, we ask that all submissions came form bands that are Native fronted or solo artists who are either American Indian or First Nations.

It is our preference to showcase artists with completed works that are available through such sites as CD BABY or AMAZON or ITUNES. If this is not the case for you , please give us an idea of when you intend to drop your release.

While we are pretty open minded to the kinds of musical submissions, ABORIGINAL SOUNDS wishes to only feature modern, contemporary music such as rock, metal, punk, hip-hop, rap, blues, jazz or country/americana (more americana). Spoken word poetry, traditional or pow wow music will not be accepted!

If you have any additonal questions regarding submitting materials to this program please contact the program producer BRIAN LUSH at 505.414.4888 or email him at djlush@rockwired.com.
