2011 - We couldn't think of a better time to make an announcement like
this! ROCKWIRED will be launching a speical 10-part radio series
entitled ABORIGINAL
SOUNDS: A CELEBRATION OF CONTEMPORARY NATIVE MUSIC. This
special series will be coming to ROCKWIRED in May and will feature
exclusive interviews and music from American and Canadian Indian
performers as well as entreprenuers within the music industry. One of
the
artists/entreprenuers that you will hear from in this special series
will be Comanche/Cherokee rock guitarist MICKI FREE - the founder of
NATIVE MUSIC ROCKS - an initiative launched by the the Seminole Tribe
of Florida to promote American Indian musicians. Having
demonstrated a proclivity for music at an early age following seeing
JIMI HENDRIX live, FREE took to the six strings like it was nobody's
business and got discovered by GENE SIMMONS of KISS. Before long, the
rocker found himself in the R&B outfit SHALAMAR and
onward to the rock band CROWN OF THORNS. A couple of
solo albums followed as well as an exploration into Native
Americn flute. FREE boasts a resume that is as expansive as his vision
for American Indian music reaching the mainstream but that don't mean
that he's abandoned his own musical ambitions. In the past year, he
released his CD AMERICAN HORSE - an electrifyingly grooving affair
that will draw the inevitable comparisons to JIMI HENDRIX but
will also show listeners what is possible with just six strings and
some serious attitude.

comes to
interviewing and building a lasting rapport with the artists that come
ROCKWiRED’s
way. As a youngster, BRIAN LUSH had no idea what kind of seed was being
planted
by reading magazines such as HIT PARADE, HIGH TIMES, SPIN, REQUEST
(remember
that one?) and even ROLLING STONE.
“Those were the days before the internet and being a rock journalist
looked
like the coolest job imaginable.” says LUSH “But reading these
magazines had me
imagining that one day I’d be the artist giving all of the clever
answers to
some poor guy with a tape recorder. Well, life has a way of surprising
you.
